Fve inmates who escaped from a Regina jail are the targets of a nationwide manhunt, but an RCMP officer says most of the force's leads suggest the men are still in Saskatchewan."Mainly, our leads have been focusing within Saskatchewan, [but we're] not going to discount the possibility, and we are looking everywhere," Sgt. Doug Coleman, with the Regina RCMP, said Wednesday. He added he was not aware of any tips coming from outside the province, but stressed that the proximity of the jail to the Trans-Canada Highway, less than two kilometres away, has kept investigators' eyes peeled across the country.Five men, labelled dangerous and possibly armed, broke out of the Regina Correctional Centre on Sunday.Three of them are awaiting trial on murder charges and one is accused of aggravated assault. An additional charge of escape from lawful custody has been slapped on all five. The charge carries a maximum sentence of two years, Coleman said.
A source from within the jail told that the escape followed a well-executed plan, which relied on poor infrastructure, the help of other inmates, and "a huge cache of sharp weapons.""It was so disturbing how many weapons they found. People are going, ‘How the hell did that happen?'" the source said, adding six inmates were able to bust through a wall to break out. The sixth fugitive, Kenneth Iron, was captured shortly after his escape Sunday night and appeared in court Tuesday. Coleman said police are unlikely to comment on the escape until details are presented as evidence before a court.
