Gangwar between The 26s and 28s gangs in Belhar
Belhar police are on high alert, as they fear tension between the 26s and 28s gangs in the area may lead to more violence after a child and teenager were wounded in a gang-related shooting last week. The incident came a week after another resident was shot in Belhar, and officers believe this was also gang-related.On Monday, Fred Jacobs, the Belhar police station's commissioner, said gangs were becoming more active in the area."There's something going on between the 26s and 28s. We think it's about drugs, but I can't say exactly why (last week's) shooting happened. It's still under investigation," he said.On Thursday, a three-year-old boy and 18-year-old were wounded on the corner of Buitengracht and Ryger Avenue.Police spokesperson Bernadine Steyn said a group of residents had been standing there when a green Toyota Tazz had stopped nearby. She said it was alleged two men got out the car and shot at the group a number of times, and some in the group had then returned fire.
The boy, who was standing at a gate in front of his house, was shot in the right arm and back, while the 18-year-old was hit in the chest.Steyn said the gunmen then sped away in their car. No one was arrested. On Monday, Jacobs said the shooting had been gang-related.He said since last week, extra police officers had been patrolling the area, which was now quiet. "At the moment we're taking precautions, because we don't know what's going to happen. We're keeping a visible police presence out there, trying to prevent things from happening."When we make arrests, we also gather information. We've arrested gangsters, but so far we haven't arrested anyone for (the latest shooting)," Jacobs said. Two attempted murder cases were being investigated.
